A Short Cooking Video of British Tea Cakes
A tea cake is a type of bun that is usually served alongside tea. It is said to have originated from England. So why is it that food which is a staple in the British diet has a place in a Toronto cookbook. The answer to that is American Revolution.
After the American Revolution, there was a large-scale immigration of British Loyalists to Canada. These immigrants fled to Canada for their own safety. Eventually due to the increase in British immigrants a merging between British and Canadian cultures would be inevitable. With this merging the already settled Canadians would slowly began to adopt and incorporate British traditions into their daily lifestyle. For instance, one popular British tradition adopted by man Canadian families would be tea time. With tea time came the preparation of the foods associated with tea like tea cakes. This one speculation behind how tea cakes were incorporated into Canadian or more specifically Toronto cookbooks.
